life’s journey and the hope and promise of what is to come.”

–Edward Mapplethorpe, from the Foreword

These portraits “so perfectly capture these little beings on the brink of personhood,
bursting with energy and an insatiable craving to discover the world around them.”

–Samantha Boardman, M.D., from the Introduction

ONE: Sons & Daughters is the culmination of a twenty-year project by internationally acclaimed photographer Edward Mapplethorpe. This compelling selection of images illuminates the fleeting, yet universal, moment of life when a child reaches one year of age. There is something remarkable in the innocent faces of the children portrayed in this book that serves to underscore our common humanity.

Complementing the sixty luxuriously printed, duotone portraits are essays about childhood by four distinguished writers – Adam Gopnik, Susan Orlean, Francine Prose, and Andrew Solomon. The renowned psychiatrist Dr. Samantha Boardman has written the Introduction, while Mapplethorpe’s close friend, artist-singer-writer Patti Smith has contributed a poem that commemorates the first year of life, setting the tone for the book.

The photographs in ONE: Sons & Daughters are beautiful and deeply engaging. Each child looks directly at the viewer revealing an inner life that is complex and mysterious, sometimes joyful and sometimes sad. Mapplethorpe states: “The emotions conveyed through the myriad expressions presented here reflect universal experiences that transcend class, gender, race, and nationality."

Andrew Solomon astutely observes, “The children in Edward Mapplethorpe’s photographs are fully realized people caught just before language upstages the light in their eyes, their pouting mouths, their brows raised in dismay at an alien world . . . Redolent with truth, these images seem to know everything that is knowable about their subjects.”

Francine Prose adds, “The children in these striking images are who they are. They are enlarged and expanded versions of their brief pasts and darling little distillates— concentrated versions of the people they will be in the future.”

Lavishly printed and beautifully designed, ONE: Sons & Daughters is a photographic masterpiece that will forever change the way we think about baby portraits.

After completing his studies in fine art, Edward Mapplethorpe assisted his older brother Robert (1946-1989) in his studio throughout the 1980s. In 1990, Mapplethorpe launched his solo career establishing a distinct and personal style.  His luminous nudes, portraits, still lives, and abstract works have been exhibited and collected throughout the United States and in major cities around the world. Mapplethorpe lives and works in New York City with his wife and one-year-old son. For more information visit his website:
